The Benefits of Reading

Libraries have always been about books and about reading. Today, libraries have expanded their services and means of reading to include digital resources. This is good! Nothing can compare, however to reading from a physical book. There are many, many benefits to your health and mental being in reading from a book.

Studies show that there are numerous benefits to your brain when you read. Reading is a form of exercise for your brain. Reading has shown to strengthen your brain.

Another benefit of reading is that it increases your empathy towards others. As you read about different characters with different personalities and circumstances you are given a window into lives and perspectives of others. It is similar to seeing the world through another's eyes.

Reading builds your vocabulary. The more you read and expose your mind to words and how they are used, the more you are equipping yourself with the ability to communicate and to communicate effectively through your knowledge of words.

Reading prevents cognitive decline as you age. Just with any other muscle, the more you use it and exercise it, the stronger it gets. Reading helps your brain stay younger and healthier.

Reading helps reduce stress. We are in an age where we're bombarded with information 24/7 and with constant communication through Social Media. This can cause stress in our lives. Reading helps take us away to other places and to give us the opportunity to also learn and to grow.

Reading before going to bed instead of scrolling Social media or watching TV helps you sleep better. Reading can calm your mind and can quieten your senses whereas what you see on the Internet or TV can cause concern and rob you of healthy, necessary rest.

If you need cheering up, reading can lift your mood. As you learn or 'escape' into a book studies show it can affect your outlook and help avoid depression.

With all the combined benefits of reading, strengthening your mind, aiding your health, build your vocabulary and broadening your viewpoint, all of these work together to benefit your overall health. Studies show that those who read have a tendency to read longer.

This year at Hancock County Library we want to encourage you to read. Read a good book. We have many books available to you and have access to many more through the state PINES system.

If you want to benefit your mind and health - read a good book today!
