Awesome October Book Reviews

Fall is a marvelous time to read a good book! We have numerous new books at Hancock County Library for all ages!
Here are some book reviews by our library staff.

A pretty solid whodunnit. Think of the movie “Knives Out”, just a bit more sinister.

I always like a biography about a strong woman. And this woman definitely was one. I’d never heard of her before but once upon a time she was known all over the world...

Not a bad read. Set in Hollywood in the 1920’s with the rise of the film industry, it’s what I’d say is a clean cut story about a time & a place gone wild. Far more light than darkness and a few iconic places and names thrown in to boot.

So, I’m on the fence about this one. It’s well written but it’s subject matter is really tragic on several levels. The characters are good & believable but their stories are heartbreaking...let’s just say it’s not a feel good read.

It’s 1899 and 12-year-old Serafina lives with her pa in the basement of the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, where the most important rule has always been that no one can know she’s there. The rich owners don't know that she lives in the basement with her father, the estate's maintenance man. But when children start disappearing, Serafina knows the culprit: the mysterious man in a black cloak she’s seen stalking the estate’s halls. With the help of the estate owners’ nephew, Braeden, Serafina must find a way to reveal the man’s true identity before all the children are gone. In the process, Serafina will learn secrets about a legacy of magic and discover who she really is.

2nd in the Magic Men series by Elly Griffiths. 1950’s Brighton, United Kingdom. A nice little whodunit with a strong background in theater & slight of hand.

Read this on our new Libby app. An interesting story based on a real crime. It’s dirty, gritty with a cast of very unlikable characters. But it’s an interesting look at 1950’s Scotland & the judicial system of the time.
